Striving For Excellence
Written by Timothy Agbenike
Excellence is one of the values at the charity I work for (Pilgrims’ Friend Society) and I think as we work in care, we all want to strive for excellence. We want to do the absolute best for the people in our care. We want to prioritise their needs and wellbeing, get to know them really well, and provide excellent care. Not just physical care but emotional, spiritual, and social care. It is a high calling indeed! And it can feel like an overwhelming goal if I look at myself and start to think that the pressure is all on me to deliver!
So, I turn to scripture, and I am reminded of 2 Corinthians 12:9: ‘“My (Jesus’) grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast even more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.’
God’s Grace Is Sufficient
The verse highlights that God's grace is not just enough; it is more than enough to meet any need or challenge we might face.
Power In Weakness
Paul found that God's power was most clearly demonstrated when he was weak and dependent on God's strength. I feel weak and dependent, and I am guessing you do too. What an incredible truth that God’s power is made perfect when I recognise my weakness.
Boasting In Weakness
Paul acknowledged that he would choose to boast in his weaknesses so that the power of Christ could be demonstrated. I do not often hear myself or others boast about weaknesses, but we are invited to be vulnerable and recognise we cannot do it all, but we know a God who can.
Finding Strength In Christ
The verse highlights the importance of finding strength and power not in ourselves, but in the abundance of God's grace and Christ's power.
So, as we strive for excellence, let us acknowledge God's grace and seek strength in weakness. And let us acknowledge the challenges one faces and trust in God's power to be made perfect through them.
